Department of Surgery Surgical Skills and Simulation Laboratory
The Surgical Skills Lab at Westchester Medical Center is a state of the art onsite facility for training and assessment of fundamental and advanced surgical technical skills and procedures. The focus is on both open and minimally invasive surgical skills as well as multidisciplinary trauma and critical care team training. The facility is approximately 2,000 square feet and is conveniently located in the lower level of the hospital, making it extremely accessible to residents and faculty virtually 24/7. Our mission is to provide a safe environment where students, residents, and practicing physicians can develop and perfect their technical skills prior to performing procedures on a patient.
Below is a layout of the surgical skills lab. As you can see, there is a large classroom area, which is used for a variety of lectures and conferences (Area 1). Teleconferencing capabilities are used to broadcast educational conferences to St Vincent’s – Bridgeport to be viewed by residents while on rotation there. Teaching modalities range from the most basic simulators and didactic online training to state-of-the-art virtual reality and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) trainers. Our newly renovated Simulated ER / Trauma Bay houses a human patient simulator, SimMan, which is used for individual and team based training for a variety of trauma and critical care situations (Area 2). Cameras and two way mirrors allow for unobtrusive observation of trainees and videotaped feedback sessions. Our minimally invasive surgical skills training area houses a variety of simulation modalities ranging from simple video box-trainers to advanced virtual reality simulation (Area 4). The facility is also equipped with a multimedia library, which houses four computer work stations and a printer (Area 3). Residents may use this facility at any time to access online and multimedia educational resources, library databases, journals and word processing, database management and presentation software.
