Urology

The medical and surgical specialty of urology focuses on the urinary tracts of males and females, and on the reproductive system of males. Medical professionals specializing in the field of urology are called urologists and are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with urological disorders.

The mission of the Department of Urology at Westchester Medical Center/New York Medical College is to provide, perpetuate and nurture the highest quality education, cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art patient care. We are most fortunate to have an outstanding, dedicated, experienced and well-trained faculty who enthusiastically embrace the ideal of educating and training the future generation of urologists, a major component of the department’s threefold mission.

The integrated residency program at Westchester Medical Center, a major New York Medical College affiliate, includes resident rotation at urban acute care hospitals, suburban tertiary care referral centers, and a specialized cancer center. Together they provide our residents with a scope and breadth of experience second to none. Weekly grand rounds conferences, a urology core curriculum club, hands-on training in a surgical simulation lab, and pathology and radiology conferences all help to provide and nurture an environment of skills advancement and learning. The urology residency program has enjoyed continued full accreditation since its inception in 1949. Since 2003 all of our residents have successfully passed the American Board of Urology exam and forty percent have pursued fellowship training.

The Department is strongly committed to clinical and basic urologic research. Our laboratories directed by an accomplished full-time Ph.D. researcher. Residents and medical students are strongly encouraged to participate in research. Members of the department have published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, and residents and faculty frequently present their findings in regional, national and international meetings.

Providing technologically advanced, high-quality patient care is the most important component of our mission. Our experienced, well trained and dedicated faculty provide sub-specialized care in all domains of urology, including general and pediatric urology, endourology/stone disease, urologic cancer, minimally invasive/robotic urology, incontinence, infertility, sexual dysfunction and neurourology.

Research

Urology Research Laboratory was officially established in 1996 with the commitment of the late Dr. Camille Mallouh, former Chairman and Emeritus Professor. Sensuke (Konno) Sato, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and the full-time Research Director, who has been conducting multifaceted research projects since 1996.  Dr. Konno (Sato) and the urology residents and medical students at New York Medical College have published 72 papers in prestigious journals, made 130 presentations at major national and international meetings and conferences, and also won over 25 awards and prizes in those meetings/conferences; abstract/paper presentations at major urological meetings/events since 1996, including the American Urological Association (AUA) Meeting presentations; moderated sessions in AUA Meetings, representation in the F.C. Valentine Urology Residents’ Essay Meetings, participation in the Annual Endourology Fellow Essay Contest, as well as other meetings/conferences. Also, research grants from The New York Section of The American Urological Association, and awards earned at the New York Section of the American Urological Association.

Research Projects

The following are research projects being performed under Dr. Sato's supervision:

  • Critical role of oxidative stress in nephrolithiasis and its potential prevention with specific antioxidants
  • Prevention of renal ischemic/reperfusion injury with conventional and alternative approaches and their possible mechanisms
  • Assessment of possible insulin-like activity of SX-fraction (mushroom extract) with hypoglycemic effect: Prophylactic modality of diabetic nephropathy
  • Possible improvement of chemotherapeutic efficacy with “complementary” agents in the prognostic status of urological cancers (including prostate, bladder and renal cell carcinomas)
  • Investigation of the molecular basis of urological malignancies and exploration of the improved therapeutic modalities with alternative or unconventional agents (e.g., vitamin C, 2-deoxy-glucose, beta-glucan, proanthocyanidin etc.)
