Cell Biology & Anatomy


The Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy offers Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in the areas of Cell Biology and Neuroscience. Faculty in the department are responsible for the teaching of gross anatomy, embryology, histology, cell biology, developmental biology and neuroscience in the Medical School, Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences and the Graduate School of Health Sciences.

Ongoing research projects include studies of oncogene expression and cytokines, cerebral ischemia, molecular genetics of nervous system development and chromosome structure, growth control in skeletal muscle, signal transduction in platelets, retina, muscle cells and the leech nervous system, intracellular protein degradation, cytoskeletal and receptor function, development and regeneration of the visual system, extracellular matrices and limb development. Techniques utilized include tissue culture, yeast genetics, protein sequencing, protein chemistry, recombinant DNA technologies, digital image analysis, electron microscopy, electrophysiology and confocal microscopy.
