VALHALLA, N.Y., March 28, 2005 – Waldemar A. (Tony) Comas, J.D., has been named vice president and general counsel by the Board of Trustees of New York Medical College. He will be responsible for providing legal guidance and support to various constituencies of the College, including trustees, officers, administrators, faculty, employees and students.

Mr. Comas began his career at the College in 1986 as associate general counsel. In 1989 he was promoted to associate vice president for legal affairs, assuming responsibility for labor and employment, faculty practice, affiliations, insurance, litigation and other legal matters. In 2002 he was promoted to senior associate vice president for legal affairs, taking on duties related to the College’s Westchester Medical Center affiliation. Since July 2004 Mr. Comas has served as chief legal advisor to the president and chief executive officer, the Board of Trustees and all of the College’s officers and administrators.

Mr. Comas graduated cum laude from the City College of the City University of New York. He received his juris doctor degree from Columbia University’s School of Law, where he was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar for academic excellence. Prior to joining the College, Mr. Comas worked for the New York City office of the National Labor Relations Board, where in 1979 he was promoted to supervising attorney, the nation’s first Puerto Rican American to be so named. His previous positions have included Warner Amex Cable Communications, Inc., where he was corporate manager of labor relations, and Metropolitan Hospital Center, where he served as director of personnel and labor relations.

He is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association and other professional organizations. Among his numerous community affiliations, he serves as secretary of the Puerto Rican Organization for Growth, Research and Self-Sufficiency, Inc. He is a trustee of the 1199/Employer Child Care Fund and of the 1199/League Pension Trust Fund. He and his family live in West Harrison, N.Y.
