Visit the SOM Student Senate WebsiteThe New York Medical College Student Senate is composed of twenty-one peer-elected student representatives from all classes. The senate works closely with students, faculty, and administrators to elicit their concerns and helps create solutions that will ensure the success and holistic wellness of the entire New York Medical College Community. The Student Senate also serves to empower our colleagues to create an atmosphere of professionalism, inclusion and camaraderie for current and future students at New York Medical College.

The twenty-one members of the Student Senate include 5 representatives per class and the Student Senate President. Each year, the senators elect members of the their executive board which consists of a President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.

Members

CLASS OF 2024

Katherine Lo (President)   

Katie was born and raised in San Francisco, California. She graduated from Boston University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. While at BU, she contributed to orthopedic and chemotherapeutic research, served as Chief Medical Scribe at a Boston hospital, designed engineering activities for middle and high school students, and was actively involved in STEM mentorship and leadership. She spent her gap year working on manufacturing and supply chain projects at Genentech, a biotech company in South San Francisco. Along with serving as the President of Student Senate, Katie is the Director of Content for the NYMC Resiliency Curriculum, Co-President of the Basketball Club, and a TELP Scholar who helped design a novel Implicit Bias and Microaggression Training for third-year students. Outside of academics, she enjoys playing basketball, thrift shopping, baking, trying new restaurants, and spending time with friends and family. Katie is eager to advocate for her peers and work towards building a strong sense of community through the Student Senate.

Alice Zhang

Alice was born and raised in New Jersey. She attended Rutgers University, where she studied Molecular Biology and Biochemistry with a minor in Psychology. Following her undergraduate studies, she entered New York Medical College to pursue medicine. From her own experience with illness in childhood, Alice is a strong believer in the power of medical care in human life, and is excited to join such an impactful field. In her time at New York Medical College, she has worked passionately on the Wellness Committee, Liaison Committee, and Volleyball Club. In her free time, she enjoys volleyball (obsessively!), video games, and spending time with family and friends. Alice is thrilled to further serve the student body on the Student Senate this year.

Chris Hoke

Chris was born and raised in Rockland County, New York. Chris graduated from Lehigh University in 2016 where he majored in Behavioral Neuroscience and Music prior to pursuing his Masters here at NYMC. Before medical school, you could find Chris working as a physical therapy aide while following up on research he did during his Masters. Mental health has always been of major importance to him and you can often hear him saying his signature line “you gotta have your mind right”. In his free time you can still find him playing, studying and writing music or rooting for his favorite football club Arsenal FC. Always approachable, you can find Chris roaming campus but also feel free to reach out to him if you ever want to “kick it”.

Joe Mohrbacher

Joe grew up near Storrs, CT and attended undergrad at Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College in Lancaster, PA, where he studied Chemistry and did research in Organic Chemistry. During his college years he discovered a love for people and for medicine, prompting a switch to pre-med track his junior year. His 5 gap years post-college included trips to Korea and South America and employment with ScribeAmerica in various roles, most notably Quality Assurance Manager of the scribe program at Jefferson Health Northeast in Philadelphia. Here, he discovered a passion for teaching / medical education, as he designed and personally taught a site-specific classroom training curriculum for all new scribe hires for the system. He also has a passion for cross-cultural care and care to socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, which he has had opportunity to explore through his involvement serving immigrant populations with the Beacon Christian Community Health clinic in Staten Island and as a founding e-board member of NYMC's Homeless Outreach club (now called HOME). His free-time interests include singing/playing guitar; the city of Philadelphia (go Birds!) (but NYC is quickly growing on him); and foreign languages (he is semi-conversational in Spanish and has dabbled in Korean and Arabic).

Samir Ali

Samir is excited to serve as an M4 Senator at New York Medical College. The opportunity to represent his fellow students and make their voices heard is a responsibility he is eager to embrace. He looks forward to organizing engaging events that will not only strengthen the bonds within his class but also contribute to the enriching experience of medical school. As he begins this role, he is motivated by the desire to leave a positive and lasting impact for all the future classes that will follow. Together with the student body, Samir believes Student Senate can shape a vibrant and inclusive environment that fosters growth, camaraderie, and excellence within this institution.

Tim Sullivan

Tim is excited to be representing the Class of 2024 in their final year of medical school! He was born and raised in New Jersey and attended Seton Hall University for undergrad. In his free time he enjoys going hiking, playing golf or tennis, banging on his drums, or nerding out to Star Wars and Seinfeld. In this upcoming year, he looks forward to applying for a residency in radiology and working to give his 4th year class the best year possible.

CLASS OF 2025

Ankita Jain  

Ankita was born and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She graduated with her Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill in 2017, and her Master’s of Science in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University in 2018. Following her graduate studies, Ankita served as Administrative Director of Access to Integrative Medicine Health Institute (AIM), a health-based, non-profit organization that strives to expand access to integrative medicine services to underserved populations in Washington, DC. As a 2019-2020 awardee of the United States Department of State Fulbright Scholarship, Ankita spent nine months teaching English at Him Jyoti School (HJS), a non-profit, all-girls boarding school in Dehradun, India. At NYMC, she holds leadership positions in various student organizations including Association of Women Surgeons and Space Medicine Interest Group. As a Student Senator, Ankita looks forward to collaborating with students, faculty, and the Administration to make the medical school experience as enriching, supportive, and inclusive as possible. Outside of school, Ankita enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants in NYC, exercising, and spending time with family and friends.

Doria Weiss (Vice President)

Doria grew up in Orange, Connecticut. She attended University of Michigan with a major in Public Health Science and minor in Biochemistry. While in college, Doria was a research assistant in the pediatric endocrinology and emergency departments at Yale New Haven Hospital. At the Michigan School of Public Health, she served on the Student Advisory Board and participated in research focusing on the relationship between depression and the development of Type II Diabetes. Following graduation, she spent her first gap year in Latin America working in global public health with underserved populations. During her second gap year in New York City, she worked as a clinical program coordinator and data specialist at a start-up health services company dedicated to enhancing access to diagnostic testing and care. In her free time, Doria enjoys traveling to exciting new places, playing soccer, and skiing out west.

Eseiwi Aifuwa  

Eseiwi was born in Sunbury, Pennsylvania but grew up in Edison, NJ. He attended Princeton University with a major in Chemical and Biological Engineering. While in college, Eseiwi was an engineering and biotechnology undergraduate researcher. After graduating, Eseiwi worked as a management and technology consulting analyst at Accenture’s New York City office. At Accenture he worked as the liaison between the business and technology ends of large scale software implementations. Outside of work, Eseiwi Enjoys reading, writing, and watching movies (especially psych thrillers!), and spending quality time with friends. He is incredibly honored to represent the class of 2025 as a student senator and hopes to work hard to make the large NYMC community feel smaller and more tightly knit.

Harry Haran

Harry was born in Chicago but grew up in Mississauga, Canada just outside of Toronto. Later he moved to the US to attend Binghamton University where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematical Sciences. During his time at Binghamton, he worked as an EMT and a trauma technician locally. Upon graduation Harry decided to pursue medicine and eventually went on to attend NYMC at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where he completed research in the Physiology Department under a NASA grant. In addition Harry decided to continue clinical work by scribing at WMC in the Emergency Department. After being accepted into medical school here at NYMC, Harry has continued to show interest in research in the medical education field, as well as surgical fields. In his free time, Harry enjoys playing sports like basketball, soccer, and volleyball and will occasionally run. As laid back as he is, Harry really enjoys advocating for students and creating/editing/understanding the rules within the Senate and NYMC.

Miriam Katz

Miriam grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut. She graduated from the University of Connecticut with degrees in Physiology & Neurobiology and Molecular & Cell Biology in 2019. She went on to earn a Master’s of Public Health and worked on multiple R01-funded heart failure clinical trials at Yale University. While studying, researching, and volunteering in New Haven, CT, Miriam developed a passion for preventing cardiovascular disease in underserved populations by addressing social determinants of health, utilizing mobile health devices, and understanding genetic and population-level factors. Miriam is excited to represent and advocate for her peers and encourage a strong culture of collaboration and wellness at NYMC. In her free time, Miriam enjoys running, hiking, spending time with friends and family, and exploring new restaurants in NYC!

CLASS OF 2026

Alexander Park (Outreach Coordinator)

Alexander (Alex) is from Dix Hills, New York and attended Brown University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. During college, Alex worked as a clinical study recruiter, pulmonary hypertension researcher, and volunteer at the Rhode Island Center for Primary Care. He also served as the Captain of the Brown Men’s Swimming and Diving program as well as the President of the Korean American Students Association. In his free time, Alex enjoys working out and spending time outdoors, cooking, horology, and hanging out with friends and family. Alex is grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Student Senate and looks forward to advocating for and leading his classmates. He is excited to serve as the Community Outreach Coordinator, and is always open and available to students, faculty, and alumni.

Audrey Huang (Treasurer)

Audrey is from Washington state and graduated from the University of Washington with a major in Physiology and a minor in Nutrition. Prior to entering medical school, she helped teach undergraduate anatomy and physiology courses, which contributed to her interest in education. She also worked as a clinical laboratory technician at a virology lab, where she participated in COVID-19 testing. She continued her work with a neuropathology lab as an autopsy assistant, extracting and preserving tissues from the bodies of organ donors for scientific research. In her free time, she really enjoys reading, hiking, and cooking. At NYMC, Audrey is involved in the Student Interest Group in Neurology, Food Insecurity and Medical Outreach, and Clinical Chinese Club. Audrey is excited to continue working as a Student Senator and advocating for meaningful and constructive changes to enhance the student experience. As Senate Treasurer, she is also looking forward to working closely with student groups and providing them with the necessary support to achieve their goals.

Ipsha Banerjee

Ipsha grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and graduated from UC Berkeley in 2020 with degrees in Integrative Biology and Psychology. While in undergrad, she worked as a myopia researcher, volunteered as a voice and piano teacher, and served as a Peer Health & Wellness Leader. During her gap years, Ipsha received her M.S. in Biomedical Informatics from Arizona State University and wrote her thesis on granular sensitive health data sharing, which sparked her passion for clinical informatics. She also taught as a Graduate Student Instructor, volunteered with the Red Cross, and joined her local Toastmasters chapter. In her spare time, Ipsha enjoys painting, singing, baking, and exploring the frozen food section at Trader Joe’s. Ipsha is thrilled to represent her classmates as a Student Senator and help cultivate an environment of collaboration, inclusivity, and wellness.

Lillian Huang (Secretary)

Lillian is from Queens, NY, and attended Boston University for her B.S. in Human Physiology and New York Medical College for her M.S. in Basic Medical Sciences. Before medical school, she worked as a pharmacology researcher, chief scribe, project manager, and education consultant, providing different lenses into healthcare and pushing her interests in healthcare policy and operations. Thrilled to return to NYMC, where she founded the STEM Mentorship Club and serves as Co-President of Clinical Chinese Club, Lillian plans to continue advocating for community growth, inclusion, and wellness. Passionate about leadership, Lillian hopes to inspire everyone at NYMC to find their niche. Reach out to her anytime to talk about video games, books, and music! Sumaita Mahmood

Sumaita was born and raised in Queens, New York. She graduated from New York University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Global Public Health and Chemistry with minors in History and Genetics. After earning her degree, she worked as the clinical coordinator during her glide year between medical school and undergraduate at Jacobi Medical Center's Tropical Medicine and Parasitology Clinic. She also worked as interim coordinator for the Office of Faculty Development at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. On weekends, she had the opportunity to be a patient advocate as part of Bellevue Hospital's PAVERS program. After her time in different parts of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) system, she hopes to return to this system one day as an attending, serving the community that has supported her. In her free time, she kayaks. At NYMC, Sumaita is currently an MD/MPH candidate, events coordinator for BNGAP, and President of the Medistorian Society. More importantly, she is humbled to be able to represent her class with her fellow Senators, hoping to advocate for her peers as she would for future patients.

CLASS OF 2027

Amber Zhao

Amber is from Minnesota and attended Columbia University for her B.S. in environmental engineering. After graduating in 2021, she spent her two gap years working as a legal advocate for survivors of violent crime and chief clinical assistant at a fertility clinic. She has also spent the past three years as a rape crises counselor working with survivors in emergency departments. In her free time, she enjoys going on nature walks, doing crosswords, and spending time with her cat. At NYMC, Amber is the founder of the local MagicAid chapter, an organization that provides pediatric patients with magic therapy. She is passionate about patient care and advocacy, and hopes to bridge the gap between the clinical and emotional components of medical care in her future practice. Amber is honored to serve as a student senator and advocate for her peers. She hopes to inspire kindness and joy in those around her.

Dorothy Liu

Dorothy is from Great Neck, New York. She graduated from Hunter College Macaulay Honors College with a degree in Biochemistry. While at Hunter, she contributed to microbe, colorectal cancer and homelessness research. She was also actively involved in STEM mentorship, emergency department volunteering and the Hunter Cross Country team. She spent her gap year as a research associate at ICON plc, a clinical research organization. Outside of academics, Dorothy enjoys running, weight lifting, baking and challenging people to connect 4. Reach out to her anytime to invite her to a NYMC event and 9 times out of 10 she can be convinced. Dorothy is excited to represent her class and work towards creating a positive and inclusive environment!

Jared Sasaki

Jared is from Huntington Beach, California and attended University of California, Davis, where he graduated with a degree in Biological Sciences. At UC Davis, Jared played for the D1 baseball program, serving as team captain and team representative for the UC Davis Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Jared also worked as a high school baseball coach, a brain development researcher, and a COVID-19 test volunteer during his time at Davis. In his two years post graduation, Jared worked as a Medical Scribe/Technician for an Ophthalmology clinic in an underserved area in Los Angeles and interned with Healthcare in Action, a street medicine organization that brought healthcare and social services to patients experiencing homelessness. In his free time, he enjoys working out, playing pick-up sports, golfing, hiking, playing fantasy football, and spending time with family and friends. Jared is extremely grateful to be a part of the Student Senate this year and will work hard to advocate for his fellow classmates and improve the community at NYMC.

Nadia Briones

Nadia was born and raised here in NY and is a first generation American whose parents are from Argentina. She graduated from The Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford with a degree in Classical Vocal Performance. Before completing college she began working for a tech-startup called Bright Line Eating that helps people who struggle with food addiction. She remains very involved with the research arm of their organization. Shortly after college, she went on to study massage therapy at the Finger Lakes School of Massage which inspired her to pivot toward a career in medicine. She also holds leadership positions with the Music as Medicine as well Medical Musician organizations at NYMC. Nadia is excited to be a part of the student senate to advocate for her class and contribute to the flourishing NYMC community.

Nourelhoda Gouda

Nourelhoda was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from the Macaulay Honors Program at the City College of New York with a degree in Biochemistry. During her undergraduate studies, she performed basic biochemistry research, was a peer-to-peer tutor in chemistry and calculus and was a board member in a mentorship program that aimed to guide incoming first year students as they adjusted to their respective undergraduate curriculum. During her gap years, she began working as a medical practice associate at Columbia Doctors Midtown. She then obtained her EMT certification and worked as an EMT during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Later, she began working as a molecular virology technician in a newly formed COVID-19 testing lab and soon after took on the role of Clinical Lab Manager. In addition to serving as an M1 Student Senate Representative, she is very interested in the field of pediatrics and hopes to delve into areas of public health, medical education, and clinical research in her future career. She also enjoys playing chess, cooking, travelling, painting, clay molding, and wood carving. Nourelhoda is very excited to begin her role as an advocate for her peers and hopes that she can help implement positive changes as a member of the Student Senate.
