Welcome to the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at New York Medical College. The Department is committed to excellence as we prepare skilled clinicians who use principles of evidence-based and ethical practice in the delivery of speech-language and swallowing services in healthcare and other professional settings. Our full-time program has a unique focus in medical speech-language pathology, although graduates are well-prepared for employment in all professional settings of the discipline.
The academic coursework and clinical practicum sequence occurs across five semesters of the program. A sixth semester is available for students who require additional time to complete clinical requirements. Academic courses are intended to provide each student with the theoretical background knowledge and essential skills necessary to engage in supervised clinical practice as a speech-language pathologist. The first two semesters of clinical work occur in the department’s on-site clinic, Boston Children’s Health Physicians Division of Speech-Language Pathology. The program offers three external rotation opportunities that occur during the final three semesters of the program and include:
External Practicum: Healthcare Settings to include acute care hospital, acute, subacute, or long-term rehabilitation facility, pediatric inpatient facility, outpatient medical setting, etc.
External Practicum: Modules for Medical Competencies -This experience is designed for students to achieve a variety of medically based SLP competencies through a series of modular experiences in health care settings. These include experiences in adult and pediatric dysphagia, trachs/vents/critical care, AAC in medical settings, audiology and inpatient behavioral health.
External Practicum: School-based Settings to include preschools, elementary and secondary schools.
Beyond the classroom and clinic, students have the opportunity to engage in inter-professional education activities along with students from the Department of Physical Therapy. Additionally, students complete training programs in LSVT LOUD (Lee Silverman Voice Therapy) and FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing).
