NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan has served the patients of New York City for over a century as a municipal health care facility. Founded in 1875, as the Homeopathic Hospital, and located on Ward’s Island in the East River. The facility was renamed Metropolitan and moved to a site on Roosevelt Island in 1884, and then to its current site in 1955. Metropolitan is located in an area where the East Harlem community of Manhattan merges with the Upper East Side and Yorkville neighborhoods.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is a 322-bed acute care hospital 77 beds allocated to the Medical Service and Medical/Cardiac Intensive Units. The hospital has a large and busy Primary Care Clinic, as well as clinics in all of the major medical subspecialties. The hospital also provides inpatient beds and outpatient clinic services in the major surgical specialties, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, psychiatry, neurology, palliative care & hospice, and physical medicine & rehabilitation. 

The Affiliation with New York Medical College
New York Medical College is one of the oldest and largest private medical schools in the United States. Originally located in New York City, the college moved to Valhalla, New York in the 1970’s and is now about 25 miles north of Metropolitan. 

The affiliation between NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and New York Medical College extends back to 1875, making it the single oldest affiliation between a municipal hospital and a private medical school in the United States. Today, the hospital remains as one of the university teaching affiliates for the school. All NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan supervisory attending physicians are faculty members of the medical school. The Metropolitan faculty also have academic appointments and are involved in academic activities at the medical school. Additionally, the hospital is integrally involved with undergraduate medical education programs in virtually all major disciplines. The Department of Medicine participates in the following medical student education programs: Foundations of Clinical Medicine (a course for first and second-year students); third-year student’s Medicine clerkship; and fourth-year student’s sub-internship and subspecialty rotations. 

How to get here
NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is located just off the East 96th Street exit of the FDR drive. Via subway, the hospital is conveniently located 2 blocks from the 4, 5, 6 trains along Lexington Avenue and 1 block from the Q train along 2nd Avenue. It is also easily accessible by bus. 

Parking
Parking is available across the street from the hospital at a reduced rate for all house-staff. Street parking options are also available on adjacent streets.
