Overview

Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Competency Based Assessment and Clinical Skills Education/ The Director of the Clinical Skills Center, this position is responsible for direct oversight of the Standardized Patient (SP) program including recruitment, training and quality control.  The Director will also serve as a member of the administrative team responsible for creating quality simulation and assessment content while also ensuring faculty remain abreast of cutting edge standardized patient methodologies.

Superior customer service skills as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of organizational personnel, staff/faculty and students is paramount.

Responsibilities

(A) Standardized Patient Oversight:

  • Train standardized patients and standardized patient educators to play active roles in teaching medical students/medical professionals in the art of advanced communication, history taking, and physical exam skillsets
  • Implement inventive audition/recruitment procedures and cultivate new groups of SPs via casting networks, headshots/resumes, etc.
  • Oversee new SP onboarding including executing advanced bootcamps, establishing mentoring partnerships, and implementing Mock-OSCE sessions
  • Monitor standardized patient employee pool for testing accuracy as well as assess inter-professional and intra-professional rater reliability
  • Assess the need for SP remediation and construct action plans around the required areas of improvement
  • Oversee daily SP training briefings and ensure that SPs behavior and performance are being monitored when they are onsite
  • Schedule hired SPs for all necessary program dates and manage any changes in schedule

(B) Educational Support:

  • Preserve current standardized patient curriculum for New York Medical College and pilot innovative programs with departmental directors and leaders
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive library of SP training videos
  • Work with appropriate administration and faculty to schedule training programs and assessments that utilize SPs
  • Navigate student needs when SP programs are being facilitated
  • Contribute to educational activities at the CSSC as required and oversee the SP physical exam teaching specialists program
  • Provide program feedback and evaluations to learners and staff and continually make adjustments as needed to SP training materials and student guides
  • Assist with expanding SP programming outside of current clients and participate in outreach activities
  • Manage incident reports, keep active casting rosters, and make sure that SPs adhere to general rules of the CSSC
  • Schedule hired SPs for all necessary program dates and manage any changes in schedule

(C) Administrative Management:

  • Oversee the daily activities and productivity of the Educational Coordinator and Program Assistant
  • Ensure that the clinical skills center is properly staffed for all standardized patient activities
  • Maintain data confidentiality and security among all users and learners including the Educational Coordinator and Program Assistant.
  • Oversee the daily activities and productivity of the Educational Coordinator and Program Assistant
  • Foster a work environment that is affable, productive, and solidly communicative with other departments and their staff members

Qualifications

(A) Education requirement:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Active member of the Association of Standardized Patient Educators- Preferred

(B) Technical/Computer skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook)
  • Familiarity with SP digital programs such as LearningSpace and scheduling applications

(C) Other Skills:

  • At least 5 years’ leadership experience managing/ coordinating SP programs
  • Knowledge of SP teaching practices, technologies, and applications
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students
  • Demonstrated history of meeting deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain a successful working budget
  • Must be innovative, decisive and motivated
  • Must possess strong professional integrity and show a commitment to diversity
  • Ability and wiliness to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend assignment

(D) Prior experience:

  • Prior experience at a medical institution in planning, developing, and implementing customized standardized patient programs for medical education, medical professionals, and general staffing/educational programs
  • Prior experience as a Standardized Patient
