SUBJECT: NYMC Moves to SmartBen for Open Enrollment 2016

The 2016 NYMC Benefits Open Enrollment period will begin on Monday, November 30, 2015 and continue through Wednesday, December 9, 2015.  Benefit elections made at this time will be effective from January 1, 2016 - June 30, 2016.


Beginning this year, you will enroll or make changes online with our new benefits administration system, SmartBen, which will replace the current PeopleSoft eBenefits system.

During the Open Enrollment period—Monday, November 30, 2015 through Wednesday, December 9, 2015—you may enroll in or change the following benefits:

  • Medical+
  • Dental+
  • Flexible Spending Accounts++
  • Outlook Vision Plan++
  • Commute-n-Save++

+Medical and Dental: Please note, if you do not make any changes to your existing Medical and Dental selections, they will stay the same as they currently are. (This is called “passive enrollment.”)

++Flexible Spending Accounts, Outlook Vision Plan, Commute-n-Save: 
In order to maintain or change your Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Outlook Vision Plan and/or Commute-n-Save, you must re-enroll in these benefits via SmartBen during the November 30-December 9, 2015 Open Enrollment period. These benefits do not automatically continue unless you re-enroll. Please note that these selections are effective for only six months (see details below), through June 30, 2016, so please make your choices—particularly your FSA funding amount—accordingly. 

Please review our new Employee Open Enrollment Guide (Item 2 Below) for additional information about your benefit options and instructions about “How To Access SmartBen For the First Time” on page 2.  


In 2016, NYMC will be synchronizing our Open Enrollment cycles with the Touro College and University System. As a result, there will be a second Open Enrollment period in spring 2016, during which time you will have another opportunity to make changes to your benefit options. Any changes you elect at that time will be effective from July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2017.

* Part-Time Employees: scheduled to work ≥ 17.5 hours
