Biography:

Doris J. Bucher, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology, oversees the laboratory that develops high-yield reassortant strains for the production of the world’s annual supply of influenza vaccine—some 400 million doses worldwide. Each year’s vaccine is different, containing the three or four strains that health officials believe are most likely to emerge during the subsequent flu season. Approximately 160 million doses of flu vaccine will be produced this season for the United States and an additional 200-300 million doses are produced worldwide. She received her B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and Ph.D. from University of California at Berkeley

INFLUENZA VACCINES DEVELOPMENT OF KEY HIGH YIELD SEED VIRUSES
Key lab which provided hyrs for the swine flu vaccine manufacture in 2009, NYMCs X-179A and X-181. Used worldwide for preparation of 400-500 million doses annually to present. Since 2007—two – three NYMC hyrs are used in the annual flu vaccine by nearly all flu mfgers world wide. Our laboratory is the only site capable of developing high growth type B reassortants All of our NYMC seed viruses available for use in the influenza vaccines are posted at the WHO website. All available candidate vaccine viruses from NYMC and reagents are listed at: http://www.who.int/influenza/vaccines/virus/en/
