Dr. Shantie Harkisoon’s career in family medicine began as a provider at North Hudson Community Action Corporation, a not-for-profit organization based in northern New Jersey. A year later, she became faculty and later assistant program director at the NYMC Family Medicine Residency Program in Jamaica, Queens. In 2006, Dr. Harkisoon joined the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program in Brooklyn, New York, as the assistant program director from where she was recruited to start a new program.
As the Program Director of the NYMC Phelps Family Medicine Residency, Dr. Harkisoon has been responsible for overseeing design and implementation. She successfully led the program to its formal accreditation by the ACGME, the recruitment of residents and faculty, including over 100 volunteer physicians, the acquisition of over 5 million dollars in grants and private donations, the building of the residency office, the design of the new teaching family medical center and most recently, the successful launching of the program’s first graduates who will all be staying in New York.
Dr. Harkisoon earned her medical degree at the University Of Kentucky College Of Medicine, she completed residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, a faculty development fellowship at the Institute for Urban Family Health in Manhattan and a Program Director Development Fellowship with the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors. She is a member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She lives with her husband and two daughters in Briarcliff Manor, NY.
