Harriette Rosen Mogul, M.D., M.P.H., is associate professor of clinical medicine and director of research, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. An endocrinologist, epidemiologist and early pioneer in women’s health, Dr. Mogul founded the nation’s first Institute for Medical Research in Women at Columbia University where she spearheaded large national studies in women and weight gain. She has conducted multidisciplinary collaborative studies including the evaluation of the menopausal transition of inner-city women, a randomized trial of the estrogen patch versus estrogen pills in women with pre-diabetes and a multi-institutional study of adults with Prader Willi Syndrome. Her most recent research has focused on the identification and treatment of women with Syndrome W - a disorder characterized by weight gain, and increased waist circumference in midlife women with normal glucose tolerance tests and elevated insulin levels. Findings from EMPOWIR: Enhance the Metabolic Profile of Women with Insulin Resistance, a multi-center, randomized clinical trial of carbohydrate modified diet and insulin sensitizing medications, have been presented in national meetings and published in PLOS-One and The New England Journal of Medicine. She received her M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and M.P.H. from Columbia University School of Public Health
