Dr. Alberto Nasjletti served as the former director of the College’s first NIH program project grant, Hormonal Regulation of Blood Pressure, continuously funded since 1985 and now directed by Dr. Michal L. Schwartzman, Chair of Pharmacology, with whom he works closely. This wide-ranging project involves the investigation of vascular and renal mechanisms underlying the development of hypertension and associated disorders. Dr. Nasjletti’s distinguished scientific contributions (too numerous to mention) earned him an NIH MERIT Award, the Irvine Page-Alva Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award from the AHA Council for High Blood Pressure Research, and many other awards.
Dr. Nasjletti consults on all grant proposals, including NIH R01’s, American Heart Association Grants and Fellowships, and other awards. The Chair calls upon his advisement for many issues relating to our research, teaching, academics and administrative activities in the department. As we have submitted our Program Project Grant for renewal, Dr. Nasjletti’s expertise, review, critique and involvement played a critical role in this endeavor as we added a new component to the PPG, which is directed by one of our new faculty members.
Dr. Nasjletti continuously mentors our junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows and students in their ongoing research and reviews their works-in-progress. He advises our students and postdoctoral fellows in weekly journals clubs in which they learn how to read, present and evaluate scientific publications and research work, which guides them through research presentations, manuscript writing and critical thinking.
