NYMC School of Medicine alumnus Richard K. Stone, M.D. ’68, was a board-certified pediatrician, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the New York Academy of Medicine and a member of many other professional organizations. Dr. Stone had an undergraduate degree with majors in biology and chemistry from the City University of New York (CUNY)-Queens College where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and later elected to Alpha Omega Alpha at New York Medical College. Dr. Stone was a resident and chief resident in pediatrics at New York Medical College affiliated hospitals, including Metropolitan Hospital Center. After active duty at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Dr. Stone returned to Metropolitan Hospital in 1973 where he served first as pediatric residency director and then in 1981 became chief of pediatrics.
Dr. Stone served as medical director of Metropolitan Hospital Center from 1989 to 2014 and was professor of clinical pediatrics and professor of clinical public health. Dr. Stone served as president of the NYMC faculty senate for three years and was president of the Metropolitan medical staff from 1987 to 1989. Dr. Stone published numerous articles in the medical literature and was the recipient of many awards including the 2008 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. He also received a distinguished service award from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and was honored several times by both the Community Advisory Board and the Medical Board of Metropolitan Hospital Center. Dr. Stone was the 2014 recipient of the New York Medical College Distinguished Service Award.
