D.P.T. Students Race to Help Achilles International

‌‌

It started months ago with Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) students toting the first round of tempting baked goods across campus and it ended on October 9 with a post-race strawberry smoothie. And along the way, the 18th Annual Race for Rehab raised nearly $7,000 for Achilles International, a not-for-profit organization which provides a community of support to athletes with disabilities.  This year’s contribution brings NYMC’s lifetime donation to Achilles to more than $123,000 since the race’s inception in 1999.

Despite dreary weather that only a seasoned athlete could love, participants included 40 Achilles athletes and guides and members of the Burke handcycle team. Featuring pre-race warmups, the National Anthem by the SOM Arrhythmias, post-race raffles and plenty of enthusiasm, the race was organized by D.P.T. students in the School of Health Sciences and Practice, with direction from Janet Dolot, P.T., D.P.T., Dr.P.H., O.C.S., assistant professor of clinical physical therapy and Anthony M. Sozzo, M.A., M.S.Ed., associate dean for student affairs and director of student financial planning and student activities.

Kudos to D.P.T. student coordinators for making the race a success: Nicole Abbate, Rebecca Bierman, Brynn Condy, Dana D'amato, Tyler Fallon, Michael Hannett, Alexandra Kahn, Meagan Lesniak, Michael Mattelson, Urszulsa Nieznalska, Kyung-eun Park,  Michael Rydwin, Luke Traub and Lauren Villalva.
