Gladys M. Ayala, M.D., M.P.H., has been named interim vice dean of the School of Medicine, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the medical school, working with Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer and interim dean of the School of Medicine. She will oversee admissions, diversity, faculty affairs, student affairs and undergraduate medical education, in addition to keeping abreast of the academic, extracurricular, personal and professional developments of the medical student body. She is also associate professor of clinical medicine.
Dr. Ayala became part of the NYMC community in 1992 when she began working at College-affiliated NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan as an attending physician and deputy residency program director in internal medicine. She has served as vice chancellor of student affairs, senior associate dean for student affairs and associate dean for student and minority affairs in the School of Medicine. Her accomplishments and honors include being recognized by the American Medical Association Women Physicians Congress Mentor Recognition Program, a fellow of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine and a faculty inductee of the Iota Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.
She is a graduate of Long Island University and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine at Roosevelt Hospital. She received her executive M.P.H. degree from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
