The great things that are happening at NYMC just got a bit easier with the unveiling of a new core facility and shared resource, REDCap Cloud (the Research Electronic Data Capture), a data management tool. REDCap Cloud is a secure web-based application for building and managing surveys and databases online for clinical and translational research. REDCap was developed at Vanderbilt University and is currently used by more than 2,500 institutions worldwide.

The secure system is HIPAA compliant and user-friendly. Short video tutorials and a user’s guide are available, and it can be accessed at any time with an internet-connected device. Users can utilize pre-defined templates or customize the system as needed. Additionally, existing data may be imported into REDCap Cloud. Direct data entry and defined fields minimize errors.

Medical and dental coding and dictionaries are built in as well as a project calendar, a scheduling module and ad hoc reporting tools. Customized reports can be generated and data can be exported to a variety of formats. An audit trail shows all changes made to a record.

The team of, from left, Debra Abrams, research grants manager in the Department of Pathology, Fred Moy, Ph.D., associate professor of clinical pathology and director, M.S. programs in experimental pathology, John T. Fallon III, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Pathology and professor of medicine, and Anhphan T. Ly, director of analytics and data science, School of Medicine, is responsible for bringing REDCap Cloud to NYMC and is confident it will be a valuable tool for NYMC.

Multiple NYMC investigators have already begun working with REDCap Cloud and several more faculty researchers have expressed interest in it for their work. REDCap Cloud is available to NYMC faculty with an NYMC email address, and the Data Management Core charges $100 for each study, which includes access to REDCap Cloud and 500Mb in storage per year.  There is an additional charge of $100 for each additional 500 Mb needed for a given study. It is anticipated that the system will be made available across the entire Touro College and University System for future collaborations.
