Paige BrabantPaige Brabant
SOM Class of 2025

Why did you choose to become a NYMC ambassador?
I became a NYMC ambassador to showcase the incredible work, initiatives and experiences that distinguish the NYMC community.

What do you look forward to most this academic year?
This academic year I look forward to spending more time in clinical settings as a second-year student.

What advice or word of encouragement do you have for current and/or future NYMC students?
The best advice that I could give current/incoming students is to make time for things that bring you joy. Medical school can be overwhelming at times but keeping up with things and people you enjoy helps to make it less daunting. Also, I think it is important to get to know your peers and the faculty. There is an amazing network here that is crucial for your personal support, growth and success.

Philip LuPhilip Lu
SHSP Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) Class of 2023

Why did you choose to become a NYMC ambassador?
I believe social media is a great medium to distribute and exchange information who share similar interests from different corners of the world. As a social media ambassador, I believe I will be able to give a perspective to individuals who are interested in the D.P.T. program at NYMC and allow people to see how students in the program explore their journey to becoming physical therapists.

What do you look forward to most this academic year?
I am excited to experience my third and fourth clinical education experience in Manhattan in  upcoming  semesters.

What advice or word of encouragement do you have for current and/or future NYMC students?
For current/future NYMC D.P.T. students, my mantra has always been, "seek perfection, within imperfections." By accepting what we don't know, we can be inquisitive and grow from those imperfections.

Jaskunwar SinghJaskunwar Singh
SHSP Master of Public Health (M.P.H.), Health Behavior and Community Health

Why did you choose to become a NYMC ambassador?
With the increasing influence of social media, I want to share a glimpse into the lives of public health students at NYMC and encourage everyone from around the world to help create and spread awareness about the importance of the public health sector in containing diseases and other health initiatives. I want to encourage people to join in for the good cause.

What do you look forward to most this academic year?
I’m looking forward to more in-person participation in the events, clubs and activities at NYMC. I’d also like to connect more with fellow students and faculty members, helping to create a friendly environment for sharing ideas and working together as a team.

What advice or word of encouragement do you have for current and/or future NYMC students?
Strive to be better every day, and the best version of yourself. Learn lessons and grow.

Michelle CarnazzaMichelle Carnazza
GSBMS Integrated Ph.D. Program (IPP)

Why did you choose to become a NYMC ambassador?
I chose to become a NYMC ambassador because I really want to combat the imposter syndrome a lot of Ph.D. students face, and allow for a space for us to brag about ourselves. I think being such a small group of students at NYMC it's easy to get lost in the large number of medical and master's students. I hope that in doing so, it opens faculty and students' eyes to the great things we do and how awesome the Ph.D. students are.

What do you look forward to most this academic year?
This academic year I'm looking forward to  more in-person events and classes while getting closer to graduating.

What advice or word of encouragement do you have for current and/or future NYMC students?
My advice to current and future NYMC students is talk to someone, everyone and anyone. Talk to your professors. Being at a smaller school there truly is the advantage of being able to speak one-on-one with your professors to get the academic help you may need or answer any questions you have, so take advantage. Talk to your peers. It helps so much having friends and people around you who know exactly what you are going through at this fundamental time in our lives.  I have found fellow students here who will be bridesmaids in my wedding and friends I can go out any day of the week to just relax and de-stress. It will make all the difference.

Sabrina MartinezSabrina Martinez
GSBMS Master of Science (M.S.) in Basic Medical Sciences

Why did you choose to become a NYMC ambassador?
My experiences as a graduate student at NYMC have been exciting and enriching. Meeting people from different walks of life and learning various topics of medicine and basic sciences has been an experience that I will always cherish. I want to show others applying to NYMC's GSBMS that not only will they learn from experienced professors, but they will also be able to enjoy various social and extracurricular activities with their peers.

What do you look forward to most this academic year?
I look forward to building upon my skills as a student and leader of the Graduate Student Associations (GSA). I plan to expand GSA’s in-person activities this semester to create a strong community. On the other hand, I also want to sharpen my academic skills for my future studies in medicine.

What advice or word of encouragement do you have for current and/or future NYMC students?
One piece of advice is to find the kind of people who will encourage you to become your best self, and who will help you develop not only academically but in all aspects of life. Additionally, be patient with yourself since all things in life take time. If you spend your efforts on something, you will get something in return, and it’s alright if it’s not what you expect.

Anushka Anil ParakhAnushka Anil Parakh
SHSP Speech-Language Pathology (SLP)

Why did you choose to become an NYMC ambassador?
During my time in dental school in India, I found my passion in working for children and special care. This is why I chose to pursue speech-language pathology. The NYMC SLP program is a unique program with a medical focus.  Not many people around me, especially back home, were aware of the correlation between these two fields, and the vast scope of speech pathology. This opportunity to be a social media ambassador will help me raise more awareness about its scope, possibilities and its ability to change so many lives.

What do you look forward to most this academic year?
I look forward to hands-on learning in the anatomy lab. This is a hallmark of the NYMC program. I am also looking forward to multidisciplinary learning experiences and the various National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) events this year.

What advice or word of encouragement do you have for current and/or future NYMC students?
I would say perseverance and hard work toward your passion always bring results. However, don't be too hard on yourself, and enjoy this journey toward your dream.
