NYMC Has A Storied Connection To Nobel Prize Winners

Charles M. Rice, Ph.D., recipient of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was the keynote speaker at the 29th Annual Graduate Student Research Forum (GSRF) in 2017.

William Campbell, Ph.D., recipient of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, served as an adjunct professor of microbiology and immunology at NYMC for 25 years from 1985 to 2009. He was honored at the 2014 Founder’s Dinner with the William Cullen Bryant Award.

Joseph D. Etlinger, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, was referred to in the Nobel lecture by Irwin Allan Rose, Ph.D., who was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Roderick MacKinnon, M.D., recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was the keynote speaker at the 15th Annual GSRF in 2003.

Harold E. Varmus, M.D., recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was the keynote speaker at the 8th Annual Medical Student Research Forum (MSRF) in 2004.

Michael S. Wolin, Ph.D., professor pf physiology, Edward J. Messina, Ph.D. ’73, professor emeritus of physiology, and Gabor Kaley, Ph.D., who served as chair of the Department of Physiology for 37 years, were referenced in the Nobel lecture by Robert F. Furchgott , Ph.D., who was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He shared the prize with Louis Ignarro, Ph.D., who was keynote speaker at a special symposium that honored Dr. Kaley in 2002.

Edwin G. Krebs, M.D., recipient of the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was the keynote speaker at the 8th annual GSRF in 1996.

Sir John Vane, D.Phil. (1927 – 2004), recipient of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was NYMC’s first university professor in pharmacology and medicine, a special academic title designated by the Board of Trustees for distinguished individuals of international reputation who serve on the faculty. Sir John lectured and participated in research and served as a special consultant and advisor to the Department of Pharmacology.
