Stem Cells Could Be the Key to Treating Severe Blistering Disease, RDEB

Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, division of pediatric hematology, oncology and stem cell transplantation, and professor of medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy and vice chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at New York Medical College and Yanling Liao, Ph.D., clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, suggests that stem cells could be the key to treating symptoms of RDEB—the genetic condition characterized by extremely fragile skin.


New York Medical College Names Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., MACP, FAHA, FACE, Dean of the School of Medicine

Valhalla, N.Y. – Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., MACP, FAHA, FACE, has been named dean of the School of Medicine at New York Medical College (NYMC) in Valhalla, N.Y. Dr. Nadler comes to NYMC from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) where he spent ten years as professor and chair of Internal Medicine, the Harry H. Mansbach Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine and vice dean of research. A renowned expert in diabetes, Dr. Nadler previously served as director of the Strelitz Diabetes Center at EVMS and was a member of a Special Advisory Committee on Type 1 diabetes with the director of the National Institutes of Health. He assumes his role as dean in March 2019.

Affina Biotechnologies is a drug discovery start up that also offers services in protein biochemistry and assay development. There are currently nine start-ups occupying BioInc@NYMC, the mid-Hudson Valley’s only fully-equipped incubator on a health sciences college campus.


New York Medical College and Westchester Medical Center Health Network Names Dr. Rifat Latifi Chair of Surgery

Valhalla, N.Y. – Rifat Latifi, M.D., FACS, FICS, has been named chair of the Department of Surgery at New York Medical College (NYMC). Dr. Latifi is a tenured professor of surgery at NYMC and Director of the Department of Surgery at Westchester Medical Center, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and MidHudson Regional Hospital. All of the hospitals are members of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth). He previously served as vice chairman for Research and Faculty Development at NYMC.


First-Of-Its-Kind Study From New York Medical College Shows Link Between Obesity and Gum Infection

Valhalla, N.Y. – A new NIH-funded study, conducted by New York Medical College (NYMC), found a link between obesity and periodontitis, a serious and common gum infection caused by poor oral hygiene. Working on mice, faculty from the Department of Pharmacology at NYMC infected the subjects with Porphyromonas gingivalis, bacteria that cause periodontal disease, and measured inflammation. The results showed the bacteria worsened the functionality of fat tissue, which has been shown to increase obesity. In this context, the study also evaluated the anti-inflammatory properties of Kavain, an extract found in the kava plant, discovering the compound could potentially counter chronic inflammation in obese patients. Findings were originally published in The Journal of Immunology.


New York Medical College Announces Academic Affiliation With Rome Memorial Hospital
