Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

The Department provides a comprehensive training program comprised of instructional, clinical, and research experiences.  An integral part of the program is based at the Behavioral Health Center of Westchester Medical Center (WMC) Health Network. The Behavioral Health Center is affiliated with several institutions in Westchester County and New York City that provide residency training and undergraduate medical education in psychiatry. In addition, New York Medical College affords a full complement of continuing medical education programs for practicing psychiatrists.

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Residency Programs

The residency training programs of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences include New York Medical College-sponsored programs at New York Health and Hospitals/Metropolitan in New York City, Saint Joseph's Medical Center, in Yonkers, New York, and Saint Mary’s/St. Clare’s Hospitals in Denville, New Jersey. A hospital-sponsored residency program is offered at Westchester Medical Center (WMC), a major affiliate of New York Medical College.

Clinical challenges that residents may encounter cover a wide range of inpatient and outpatient, adult, adolescent, and child psychiatry services, as well as subspecialty areas including consultation-liaison, geriatrics, emergency and crisis intervention. Research opportunities are available within all of these areas in conjunction with the Behavioral Health Center and our affiliated hospitals.

Research

Residents in the WMC Psychiatry Department have completed research projects at the Nathan Kline Institute, one of two psychiatry research institutes in New York State.  Residents also have the opportunity to work with faculty from other departments including internal medicine and neuroradiology on research projects.
