Robert Small earned his M.D. at New York Medical College in 1977 after earning an undergraduate degree at Tufts University. He served as chief resident at New York University’s Hospital for Joint Diseases and completed a fellowship in hip and joint knee replacement at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
Dr. Small was an orthopedic surgeon at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York for 30 years, director of its Orthopedic Institute, and president of the hospital’s medical and dental staff. Raised in a family of doctors, Dr. Small took particular pride in being among four generations of physicians to have graduated from New York Medical College. Renowned for his compassionate care as much as for his skill as a surgeon, Dr. Small built a large and loyal following among patients, members of the community and fellow physicians. An avid bicyclist, Dr. Small died from injuries sustained in a biking accident.
