Pre-Health Enrichment Program
About the Program
Every summer, the Office of Campus Engagement hosts a 1-year pre-medical mentorship and academic advising program for 10 college graduates. The program starts with a two-week in-person summer program with incoming first-year medical students. Followed by a year of mentorship and application support.
All students who have completed their undergraduate degree are eligible to apply.
This program is offered free of charge. Housing, classroom space, faculty lectures, academic workshops, career outings, and group lunches will be provided.
Objectives
- To strengthen academic readiness before the MCAT through applied study strategies and targeted preparation, resulting in competitive MCAT scores.
- To support the successful completion of a competitive medical school application by May 2026.
- To increase the likelihood of medical school acceptance through individualized mentorship, clinical exposure, and faculty engagement.
- To foster a supportive, collaborative community that promotes confidence, resilience, and long-term success in medicine.
Goal
The Pre-Health Enrichment Program (PHEP) is designed to build support systems for college graduates in need of academic and professional guidance while applying to medical school. The goal of the program is to strengthen the academic, professional, and social skills of aspiring medical students as they prepare for the application process.
The initial two-week summer session is delivered through intensive academic modules covering gross anatomy, cell biology/histology, biochemistry, and physiology. Additional sessions focus on learning styles, test-taking skills, wellness, financial literacy, time management, accommodations, and an overview of NYMC’s academic and support resources.
PHEP students will complete the two-week session alongside incoming first-year medical students, with select sessions exclusively for PHEP participants. These focused sessions include a medical school application overview, personal statement and interview workshops, and the introduction of dedicated faculty and medical student mentors who will support participants throughout the year.
