BioInc@NYMC Welcomes Applied Biological Laboratories
Newest Client Aims to Treat Root Cause of Respiratory Disease
Applied Biological Laboratories (Applied Bio) has joined BioInc@NYMC as its newest client in the Hudson Valley’s only biotechnology incubator on a health sciences campus offering shared resources, turnkey wet lab space, and other professional services.
Applied Bio is committed to researching, developing, manufacturing, and distributing scientifically validated natural products that strengthen the body's defenses. They aim to treat respiratory disease by bolstering the innate immune system to prevent and treat early respiratory infection.
At BioInc@NYMC, Applied Bio is working on the root cause of respiratory symptoms by addressing the underlying inflammation. Their technology is focused on strengthening the respiratory barrier and preventing viruses from targeting receptors and causing infection. As part of their ongoing research, they are conducting antiviral studies using human respiratory organoids and performing detailed biochemical analysis to better understand inflammatory pathways that contribute to respiratory disease.
“Our goals for advancing respiratory treatments are to better understand inflammatory mechanisms and targets for natural anti-viral defenses and to design treatments for multiple respiratory diseases,” said Nazlie Latefi, Ph.D., chief scientific officer and co-founder of Applied Bio.
Applied Bio has already successfully marketed Biovanta, a 100 percent natural bioactive ingredient over-the-counter cold and flu remedy currently available at 28,000 pharmacies nationwide.
“The incubator has a strong academic community that has been very supportive. Also, as we design more clinical trials, having support from clinicians who are committed to research is very beneficial. We wanted to be in New York because we have been given a lot of support by the New York community and we also have long-standing academic collaborations in New York,” said Dr. Latefi. “We are extremely happy at BioInc and look forward to all the exciting research endeavors to come.”
“We are pleased to have Applied Biological Laboratories as part of our vibrant BioInc community and are committed to supporting their important work in the field of respiratory health,” said Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., vice president for research and professor of pharmacology and of pathology, microbiology and immunology, and senior vice president for research affairs at Touro University. “It’s always satisfying and exciting to welcome new clients and learn about their innovative research and how we can help them continue to break new ground.”
