32nd Annual Faculty Author Awards Highlights Faculty Excellence
A Celebration of Scholarship, Collaboration, and the Pursuit of Knowledge Across Disciplines
New York Medical College (NYMC) honored the scholarly accomplishments of faculty at the 32nd Annual Faculty Author Celebration and Awards on October 23. Organized by the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library in collaboration with the Office of the Chancellor and the Office of the Vice President for Research, the event recognized 422 faculty authors whose academic works enriched the scientific and medical literature throughout 2024. Their collective achievements included 792 publications, 595 articles, 164 published conference abstracts, 3 authored and edited books, and 30 book chapters. The comprehensive 2024 Faculty Bibliography is accessible online and available in print upon request.
“Thank you, first and foremost, to all of you and to the many other NYMC authors who we’re celebrating today,” said Marie T. Ascher, M.S., M.P.H., the Lillian Hetrick Huber Endowed Director of the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library, as she welcomed the faculty researchers. “Thank you all for the work you do to adapt science and understanding and for increasing the depth of the NYMC research footprint.”
“This award ceremony underscores the prestige of authorship, ‘a sweet fruit of inspiration,’ as one analysis described it, bringing recognition, evaluation and fame to those who navigate this rigorous part of scientific publishing, which is remarkable,” said Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., vice president for research and professor of pharmacology and of pathology, microbiology and immunology at NYMC and senior vice president for research affairs at TU, who concluded with, “Let’s applaud these trailblazers and commit to bolstering the ecosystem that sustains them through stable funding, increasing inclusive policies, and unwavering support to our awardees, your contribution is not just papers on a page. They are the lifeblood of progress.”
Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, emphasized the importance of conducting honest, credible research and being a thoughtful, engaged reader amid the internet, “a blank, unpoliced, unregulated bulletin board left unattended in the corridor where anyone can post anything.” “We gather this afternoon to honor and celebrate searching for, writing about, and publishing the truth,” he said. “But I would also recommend to you, in view of the current situation, rather to celebrate, actually reading it.”
This year, the College recognized Rebecca S. Feinberg, J.D., M.BE., M.S., associate professor of public health and bioethics in the School of Health Sciences and Practice and distinguished professor of health law and policy, Touro Law, with the award for NYMC First Author Publication with the Highest Number of News Mentions. Her work exemplifies the growing impact of interdisciplinary research that bridges health, ethics, and law.
“This may be the first time that a faculty member with a primary appointment at one of the other Touro schools received an award at our annual event,” said Ascher. “This highlights the ever-deeper connections between NYMC and the larger Touro University community as well as the importance of cross-discipline education and research.”
Awards were presented in a variety of categories considering engagement, distribution and the influence of the publications. The library collected data from Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports, and PlumX (via Touro Scholar). These proprietary, curated resources are available through the library.
