Katharine Yamulla, M.H.E.A., CHSE, assistant dean of clinical skills education and assessment and director of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center, is the first non-MD to be elected as president of Directors of Clinical Skills Education (DOCS), an Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) affiliated society.

Founded in 2011, DOCS focuses on building a cohesive and productive international consortium of educators who direct clinical skills education for medical students in order to promote scholarship, establish best practices, and encourage the exchange of ideas across the continuum of clinical skills education. The over 1,000 DOCS members represent clinical skills education at 75 percent of U.S. allopathic medical schools.

Yamulla has been an active member of DOCS since 2017, having previously served as their program planning chair and as an elected member of their Executive Council. She has also planned the annual AAMC DOCS meetings, brokering alliances among complementary societies, such as the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, the Association of Standardized Patients, and the Society of Bedside Medicine, overseeing DOCS finances, planning virtual webinars, and presenting peer-reviewed workshops.

“Serving as president of DOCS is an opportunity to strengthen how we teach, study, and support clinical skills education. DOCS brings educators together to share best practices, advance meaningful medical education research, and collaborate across institutions,” says Yamulla. “Through my term, I’m focused on building strong communities of practice, supporting student and physician wellness, expanding inter-institutional collaboration and scholarship, and elevating New York Medical College’s national presence in clinical skills education.”
