I. PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines under which the New York Medical College (“NYMC”) Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (“GSBMS”) will accept graduate credits transferred from another institution.
II. POLICY
It is the policy of the NYMC GSBMS that credits for didactic courses taken at other schools may be transferred and counted towards the student's degree requirements in both the Master’s and Ph.D. programs, subject to this policy. Such courses must be judged to represent valid contributions to the student's program of study.
III. SCOPE
This policy applies to students enrolled in the Ph.D. and 2-year M.S. programs; it does not apply to students enrolled in the Accelerated iBMS, Dental Linker, and Clinical Laboratory Sciences programs.
IV. DEFINITIONS
A. GSBMS: Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
B. NYMC: New York Medical College
C. M.S.: Master of Science Degree
D. Ph.D.: Doctor of Philosophy Degree
E. Course Director: faculty member responsible for the overall design and management of a specific course
F. Program Director: oversees a specific academic program
V. PROCEDURE
A. Only graduate-level courses from accredited universities or academic institutions may be transferred. Credits earned for research projects or research training cannot be transferred. A minimum grade of B for courses in the student's major field, or a minimum grade of C for courses outside the student’s major discipline is required.
B. Only matriculated students may transfer credits.
1. Master’s students may transfer a maximum of six (6) credits towards their M.S. degree requirements;
2. Ph.D. students may transfer a maximum of twelve (12) credits towards their Ph.D. degree requirements.
3. Transfer of credits can occur only after the satisfactory completion of twelve (12) credit hours in residence in the GSBMS.
4. Transfer credits earned more than 10 years before the date of graduation from NYMC cannot be used to fulfill GSBMS degree requirements except as specified in GSBMS rules.
5. Transferred credits do not carry their grade with them and, thus, do not contribute to the student’s GPA at NYMC.
C. The student must submit a completed GSBMS Transfer of Credit Request Form along with the course syllabus, the name of the assigned textbook or the course reading list, and other specific documentation.
D. Upon completion of the course, the student must ensure that an official transcript is sent directly from the institution offering the course to the Graduate School office.
E. The Course Director and Program Director determine the suitability and credit value of the proposed transfer credits with regard to the student’s program of study.
F. The Dean of the GSBMS will authorize the transfer if it meets the GSBMS’s rules outlined herein.
G. Requests to transfer credits for courses taken while the student is matriculated at NYMC must be pre-approved by both the student’s Program Director and the Dean.
H. All requests for transfer of credits, including the required supporting documentation, must be submitted no later than one week before the registration period for the student’s final semester at NYMC.
