Michael Klein, M.D., J.D.
Associate Professor of Medicine, NYMC
Chief of Nephrology, Westchester Medical Center

The Division of Nephrology’s clinical faculty members include senior attendings, fellows, house staff, and medical staff, who participate in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient care. Clinical care is provided with a pathophysiological approach. Team members are also actively involved in clinical and basic science research, where they participate in NIH and industry-sponsored research involving chronic kidney disease, transplantation of new kidneys, and dialysis disorders.

The renal team provides the entire scope of advanced critical care nephrology, including continuous and intermittent dialysis support for heart transplants, heart assist devices, trauma and burn patients, liver and kidney transplants, and oncology patients. The renal team provides primary nephrology and consulting services for transplantation, which also include kidney-heart and kidney-liver tandem transplants.

Medical Student Education

Third-year students interested in nephrology have the opportunity to take an elective in which they are afforded broad exposure to all aspects of clinical nephrology and hypertension. Fourth-year students can further hone their knowledge in nephrology through an elective offered at NYMC major clinical affiliates NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and Westchester Medical Center. Specific patients are to students and their cases are reviewed during daily renal rounds with attending physicians.

Nephrology Fellowship

The NYMC Nephrology Fellowship Training Program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan provides outstanding clinical and academic training that focuses on preparing competent, professional, and compassionate board-certified nephrologists who are committed to providing care that is consistently excellent, responsive, and centered around every patient.

About Dr. Alvin I. Goodman, M.D., Chair in Nephrology

Nephrologist, distinguished Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College, passed away on March 29, 2017. Dr. Goodman is survived by his wife of 60 years and five children: Nadine Goodman, Derek Goodman, Danielle Sayet, Leslie Monieson, and Reva Cotter, as well as 14 grandchildren, and one great- grandchild. Dr. Goodman was born in 1929 in Brooklyn, New York. He completed his undergraduate degree at New York University, then studied medicine at the University of Geneva Medical School. He completed his residency at Brooklyn Hospital and subsequently received his nephrology training at the Yale School of Medicine. Before settling at Westchester Medical Center, Dr. Goodman, a captain in the US Army, spent time at the Medical Research Division of the Army Chemical Center investigating neuropharmacology of chemical warfare agents.

Dr. Goodman dedicated his life to patients with chronic kidney insufficiency. He started the first dialysis center at Westchester Medical Center in 1963 and fought for Congressional approval of Medicaid- funded dialysis treatment. Dr. Goodman was a tireless advocate for the establishment of kidney dialysis centers to treat patients who would otherwise succumb to their disease. His career was further distinguished by his achievement as the founding chief of the Division of Nephrology at New York Medical College, and later the founder of the College's Renal Research Institute, both of which continue to prosper today. Fluent in several languages, broadly read, and highly educated, Dr. Goodman was always a trusted source of advice.

Colleagues, patients, and his family have benefitted from his wisdom, organizational skills, and prophecies. In addition to these gifts, he had a charming sense of humor, was always ready for a comic story, and emanated optimism and a love of life. Dr. Goodman spent his summers living on Block Island with his family and has contributed to the island's community by donating land to the Block Island Conservancy to preserve the island's natural beauty. His loving family, dear friends, and the medical community of New York reflect on Dr. Goodman's remarkable life and achievements. He will remain in the hearts and minds of those whose lives he touched. He will be profoundly missed.
