More than a century ago, the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed 50 to 100 million people worldwide, sparked similar vaccine-related research, and today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that the influenza vaccine reduces the risk of flu illness by between 40 percent and 60 percent.
