Program Structure and Training Pathways
Our residency operates as a single, continuous training program spanning PGY-1 through PGY-4. Residents progress through the program in a structured sequence of clinical rotations, didactics, and supervisory experiences designed to build competency and autonomy over time.
While the core training pathway is four years in length, there are a few important variations in how residents may enter or complete the program:
- Some residents choose to complete training after PGY-3 in order to pursue advanced subspecialty training, most commonly a two-year Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship.
- In select cases, residents may enter the program at the PGY-2 level if they are transferring from another ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency program.
- Residents who transfer into the program at the PGY-2 level are expected to complete the full remaining training sequence through PGY-4 to ensure completion of all required competencies and program requirements.
This structure allows for both continuity of training and flexibility for residents pursuing different career pathways within psychiatry.
Housing and Living Arrangements
The program and affiliated hospital do not provide institutional housing for residents. Each resident is responsible for securing their own living arrangements.
The Graduate Medical Education (GME) Office may be able to provide general guidance, resources, or referrals related to housing options in the surrounding area.
Residents are free to live anywhere within the New York City metropolitan region, including New Jersey, Long Island, and surrounding suburbs. However, it is expected that residents choose housing that allows for a reliable and timely commute to ensure punctual attendance for all clinical duties, including early morning shifts, overnight call, and weekend coverage.
