Valhalla, NY, – Today, New York Medical College (NYMC) announced it will launch a newly created Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) program, offered by the Graduate School of Basic Medical Science (GSBMS), making NYMC one of only three colleges in New York State to offer this unique Master’s degree. The two-year, 41.5 credit program, which will be housed in the Department of Pathology, will position students for future employment in highly paid health care fields.

“The goal of the program is to educate a new generation of laboratory technologists and to help meet the increasing demand for qualified professionals in this exciting and rewarding field,” says John T. Fallon III, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman of the Department of Pathology at NYMC.

Trained and qualified to work in medical, industrial or pharmaceutical laboratories, clinical laboratory scientists are at the heart of clinical care. They perform diagnostic tests which monitor treatments and uncover new disease states and continuously communicate with physicians to provide improved patient care and treatment outcomes.

“The new Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences at NYMC is a two-year program for students interested in a lifetime career in laboratory medicine,” Dr. Fallon explains. “The program will allow students to qualify for the national certifying examination for clinical laboratory technologists after the first year, and to become licensed laboratory technologists in the State of New York and other venues.”

“We are very pleased to offer this program because it prepares its graduates for an interesting career at the intersection of science and medicine. This program is unique because it provides a defined path towards a professional career,” says Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., Dean of the GSBMS.

Students who complete this graduate program will be qualified for numerous well-compensated positions in laboratories across New York State and nationwide.

Training for CLS encompasses all areas of clinical laboratory testing: chemistry, toxicology, hematology, urinalysis, immunohematology, hemostasis, diagnostic immunology, clinical microbiology, histocompatibility, and molecular diagnostics. Students who are accepted into this program at NYMC will also be instructed on state-of-the-art instrumentation using advanced computer technology.

Students will have to meet the admission criteria, which can be found here, and apply online here with supporting documentation by May 1. The new program will begin in July.
