Emergency Medicine

The original New York Medical College-sponsored Emergency Medicine Residency Program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan was the first emergency medicine program in Manhattan and the second oldest program in New York State. The NYMC/Metropolitan Program offers a three-year residency that is committed to training residents who will graduate with a high degree of academic and clinical competence.

The program director and the NYMC/Metropolitan Program faculty are committed to providing the highest quality education and promoting an environment conducive to academic and personal growth.

One of the greatest strengths of the NYMC/Metropolitan Program is the cultural diversity of patient populations and medical practice patterns. The residents have the opportunity to participate in patient care in different emergency medicine practice settings, which include the primary clinical site of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan as well as New York Health and Hospitals/Harlem.

Research

The faculty and EM staff in the department of EM at Metropolitan Hospital Center and Westchester Medical Center are most interested in working with medical students interested in participating in clinical research in EM. Students will also be able to observe and work closely with the attending staff at the medical centers and develop a better understanding of EM as a subspecialty.

It is expected that each student will complete the program with the skills necessary to perform literature searches, write research protocols, collect data in a clinical setting and understand the concepts of validity and statistical significance. Students will be required to attend weekly EM department conferences and research team meetings as scheduled. As this is a multi-site program, the student may be required to travel between facilities for meetings and conferences.

The program will run from June through August and students must be committed to participating for the full eight-week session. At the successful completion of the program, the student will receive letters documenting their participation and will be encouraged to continue working with their research team if they so chose.

If you require and additional information please email Getaw Hassen, M.D. Ph.D., director of research or call (212) 423-6464.
