For National Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, #NYMC pays tribute to the extraordinary contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders in driving progress within medicine, health sciences, and biomedical research. Kanzo Oguri, M.D., Class 1920, was the first Asian American graduate at NYMC. First-generation Japanese American, Dr. Oguri interned at the Metropolitan Hospital, where he met his wife and started a family practice in Brooklyn. George Nagamatsu, M.D., Class of 1934, professor and chair of urology, was the first Japanese American to chair a department at a U.S. medical school. He created the surgical technique Namesake Dorsolumbar Flap Incision in 1948. Yutaka Kikkawa, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Pathology (1976-1988), published pioneering research on type Il lung cells and lung surfactants in 1965, which saves newborns from respiratory distress syndrome today. Xiu Min Li, M.D., M.S., professor of @NYMC_PMI, created the first FDA-approved botanical investigative new drug (IND) under clinical trials for multiple persistent food allergies and the first IND trial to include children. Joseph M. Wu, Ph.D., professor emeritus of biochemistry and molecular biology, was the first scientist at NYMC to study mechanisms and targets of cardio protection and chemo prevention. Sangmi Chung, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, neurology and psychiatry and behavioral sciences, published a study that would identify cell type and developmental stage mechanisms of schizophrenia risk gene function. #AAPI #AAPIHeritageMonth #APAHMonth #APAHM
