One unique aspect of NYMC Dermatology Residency is the extensive training in dermatopathology. Formal weekly didactic sessions given by staff dermatopathologists focus on recognizing histologic patterns of inflammatory skin disease and neoplasms with special emphasis on developing clinical differential diagnoses. Each week, the dermatopathologist reads the biopsy specimens collected from the dermatology clinic alongside the residents. During this session, the clinical presentation of the patient is correlated with the histopathology of the biopsy specimen, allowing strong clinicopathologic correlation to be established. Residents are thus able to integrate the clinical and pathological aspects of patient presentations.
