Procedural Dermatology

The residents enjoy unparalleled hands-on experience in all facets of dermatologic surgery. The division of procedural dermatology operates under the co-directors of dermatologic surgery, Dr. Marc Handler and Dr. Hamza Bhatti. In addition to multiple dedicated surgery clinics and a high volume of surgical cases, the department also performs Mohs micrographic surgery. Throughout the year, the department has access to various lasers through a contacted laser program in which diverse patients can be treated. The department serves a multitude of patient populations with much experience in general dermatologic surgery, Mohs micrographic surgery, cosmetic surgery, and laser procedures. In addition, faculty practice electives allow the opportunity for procedural experiences. Furthermore, dermatological residents partake in extensive procedural services at the other hospitals in the program.

Mohs micrographic surgery is performed two Tuesdays per month at the Metropolitan clinic. Under the direct supervision of Hamza Bhatti, DO, residents are responsible for all aspects of the procedure which include preoperative preparation, excision of layers, mapping and division of specimens, processing of the tissue with the help of the technician, specimen interpretation, and finally the closure. Residents are the primary providers and obtain first-hand experience from start to closure.
