Endocrinology and Metabolism

Irene A. Weiss, M.D.
Associate Professor of Medicine
New York Medical College

Chief of Endocrinology and Metabolism
Westchester Medical Center

The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism provides care for patients with a wide variety of disorders including diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, disorders of the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands, disorders of calcium metabolism, and disorders of female and male reproductive hormones. Outpatient programs provide ongoing and consultative care.

Patients with insulin-dependent diabetes achieve better control of their disease with insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring. The program also focuses on evaluation of thyroid nodules and the treatment of thyroid cancer, with faculty conducting fine-needle aspiration of the thyroid under ultrasound guidance. Collaborating with the section of Nuclear Medicine at Westchester Medical Center, radioactive iodine therapy is administered to treat thyroid cancer.

A very active in-patient consultation service at Westchester Medical Center assists other services when patients have endocrine and metabolic disorders, especially diabetes mellitus; the service manages high glucose levels, which has become crucial in the care of cardiovascular, trauma, intensive care, and transplant patients.

The Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship is based at Westchester Medical Center. Endocrine fellows  regularly present their scholarly work at local and national meetings, and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
