Counseling and Psychiatric Services FAQ

Here are some other common questions about our services. If you have other questions, please feel free to call us or email us.

Do you offer counseling services at NYMC?

Yes. You have options. Students can see a clinician through the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness, or through Teladoc. Both are free and confidential.

Do you offer psychiatry services?

Yes. Psychiatrists are available through Teladoc.

Do you offer support groups?

Yes! Beginning in early 2022, we will be offering in-person groups. We conceptualize this in three categories of groups, skills based (such as coping with stress and anxiety), shared experience (such as loss), and shared identity groups for mutual support and community. Reach out to us with questions or ideas.

We will be offering two support-based groups this semester.

ADHD Support Group. Students will share and develop tools and strategies for overcoming challenges unique to ADHD, both practical and emotional. If interested in this group, email to discuss by Feb 1st.

Creative Arts Healing (Drop-In Group). This in-person group utilizes creative arts therapy as a means of expression and sharing. This will induce feelings of calm and relaxation while also offering opportunities to share and connect with other students. If interested in this group, email us by Feb 1st.

If I have private insurance, can I still use these services?

Yes. Any registered student can access these services. We do not accept payment, or insurance, the service is available at no cost.

If I currently take (a psychiatric) medication how can I obtain a refill, or get a new prescription?

Students who have set up their Teladoc account have access to a large network of board-certified psychiatrists and other mental health professionals such as PA who can prescribe medications. We encourage you to create your account ASAP and make an appointment to get started. If you take a medication Teladoc cannot prescribe we have alternative partnerships and can help you connect with a different, local practice. Please email us.

What is available through Teladoc?

Students can get care for anxiety, depression, grief, family issues, and more.

Choose to see a psychiatrist, psychologist, LCSW, or other mental health professional and establish an ongoing relationship.

Why did you make these changes?

This is a great question. We heard students' feedback and the need to have increased choice of clinicians, expanded hours, and unlimited counseling sessions. The shift to using a telehealth partner has allowed us to expand what we can offer. We still offer counseling in person, but with this partnership greatly expanded on those previously mentioned options.

We are always interested in knowing students' experience of the quality of these services and encourage feedback by emailing the director.
