David S. Markenson, M.D., M.B.A., is the director and medical director of the Center for Disaster Medicine at New York Medical College (NYMC), which he co-founded in 2005. Dr. Markenson serves as national chair to the Scientific Advisory Council for the American Red Cross and chair of the Evidence Based Group for Health for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. In addition to these roles, he serves as the deputy editor-in-chief of Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness, the premier Medline indexed journal in the field of disaster medicine. Over the course of his extensive career in pediatric emergency medicine and critical care, disaster medicine, emergency management, EMS and public health, Dr. Markenson has become an internationally recognized expert in all aspects of disaster medicine, public health preparedness and operational medicine—with a unique expertise in the areas of pediatric considerations, health care planning and education and planning for persons with disabilities.

Until this past May, Dr. Markenson was vice president of graduate medical education for the Continental, Mid-America and Mountain Divisions at Hospital Corporation of America Physician Services Group. Prior to that, he served as the chief medical officer at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colorado. Before joining Sky Ridge Medical Center, Dr. Markenson was based at NYMC and Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) on the Valhalla campus as the medical director for disaster medicine and regional emergency services and director of partnership for patients, quality data and special projects at WMCHealth. During the same period, Dr. Markenson held the titles professor of pediatrics and clinical public health and director of the Center for Disaster Medicine at NYMC.

Dr. Markenson received his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and his M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Following medical school, Dr. Markenson completed his residency in general pediatrics followed by a pediatric chief resident year and fellowship training in both pediatric emergency medicine and pediatric critical care. His career has been dedicated to improving hospital and health system quality, improving the approach to pediatric care, disaster medicine and healthcare emergency management and advancing EMS and emergency medicine. He has been the principal investigator on multiple federal grants, authored more than 50 articles and given more than 150 presentations nationally and abroad.

Dr. Markenson is married to Heidi Markenson, Ph.D., with whom he shares three children. Dr. Markenson is involved in multiple philanthropic groups including serving on the boards of several organizations.
