Professional Interests:

Dr Padmini (Mini) Murthy, Professor in Division of Health Policy and Management, in the Department of Public Health and Global Health Director. She is a physician and an activist who did her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has practiced medicine and public health for the past 25 years in various countries. She has been working in various arenas of the health care industry including the private sector She has a Master's in Public Health and a master’s in management from New York University (NYU). Murthy has been on the Dean's list at NYU Steinhart School of Education and named Public service scholar at the Robert F Wagner Graduate School at New York University. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist. Murthy is the NGO Representative of Medical Women International Association to the United Nations. She has served as a consultant to the United Nations. Murthy also serves as member of the of the Executive Committee of the NGO CSW Committee of NY at the United Nations. In this role she has met United Nations Ambassadors, high level UN personnel to discuss women’s health challenges. She has been at the fore front of organizing work- shops and seminars internationally on women’s health and the challenges faced. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Sojourner Truth Pin which is given to those women who excel in community service.

Membership :

Murthy serves as chair of the International Health Section of American Public Health Association (APHA) since  November 2020. Previously she has served as Governing Councilor APHA, representing International Health Section.  She has served as chair of the advisory council for APHA’s Publication Nations Health and was appointed to serve 2 terms as chair of the Committee of Women’s Rights APHA

Murthy serves as Global health Lead – American Medical Women’s Association and Secretary – General of Medical Women’s I international Association

Murthy serves as a peer reviewer and Associate Editor for BMC journal of Public Health and Global Journal of Medicine and Public Health.

She also serves as reviewer for APHA in the International Health Section and Committee of Women’s Rights. She blogs for Medscape and APHA.

Murthy has spearheaded the Safe Motherhood Malawi initiative at NYMC and the team has raised funds to build a maternity waiting home and collected hospital supplies for a rural clinic.

Her research interests include Women’s Health and Human Rights, Promoting Practice of Safe Mother Hood and Activism to improve the health of women in underserved communities with a focus on social determinants of health, Promotion of Distance education and social media in the practice of public health.

Murthy has been appointed to 3 consecutive terms as the Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights of the American Public Health Association (APHA) which is one of the largest professional organizations of health care professionals( physicians and public health professionals in the world). Starting in November 2012 she began her term as member of Governing Council representing the International Health section at the APHA. As faculty at New York Medical College Murthy has been honored by her students as an outstanding teacher and having been an inspiration to pursue their careers in global health. Since March 2012 Murthy hosts and writes the script for a radio show sponsored by AV radio on the Millennium Development Goals which has a worldwide audience. In Dec 2012 she was invited to deliver the 16th Marie Catchatoor Oration Lecture in recognition of her work on women’s health by The Association of Medical Women in India.

She was named Women of the year for 2012-2013 by The National Association of Professional Women USA. In August 2013 at the Triennial medical women’s congress in Seoul, South Korea Murthy was conferred the Jhirad oration award which is given once every 3 years to an outstanding woman physician. She is the first American woman physician to receive this honor an international meeting from the Medical Women’s International Association at which has women physician members in 100 countries. In June 2015, Murthy was presented Millennium Milestone Maker Award at the 9th Annual Women’s Symposium at Sias University, China.
