Susan Rachlin, M.D.Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs
Associate Professor of Radiology

Susan Rachlin, M.D., joined the Office of Medical Student Affairs as associate dean in 2013 to focus on a new longitudinal mentorship and professional development program centered on a system of student-mentor clusters throughout four years of medical school. Dr. Rachlin, who is an associate professor of clinical radiology, is also a course director for the required fourth-year radiology rotation. Dr. Rachlin earned her medical degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors at SUNY Downstate. She completed her internship in internal medicine at Staten Island University Hospital and her residency training in diagnostic radiology, including service as chief resident, at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in ultrasound there. She joined the faculty at Downstate under the tutelage of the late Lucy Squire, M.D., the noted radiologist, medical educator and mentor who was the first woman to be enrolled as a resident in Massachusetts General Hospital’s radiology program.

Dr. Rachlin joined the NYMC radiology faculty in 1995, and the following year began teaching the fourth-year elective in radiology. She has held various titles in the Department of Radiology, including associate program director, program director and vice chairman for education. She has served on numerous committees at the College and at Westchester Medical Center and was chair of the Professionalism Integrity Committee and the Student Faculty Relations Committee. She has also served on many national committees and was involved in the development of new milestones for radiology for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Her honors include being recognized last year as a leader in education by Downstate Medical Center, and in 2013, she became a fellow of the American College of Radiology, an honor that fewer than ten percent of all radiologists achieve.

She is a member of the College’s elite ranks of the Robert Goldstein, M.D., Society, a privilege reserved for faculty members who have been honored with Excellence in Teaching Awards for more than 10 years. Since she began teaching the Radiology clerkship in the fourth year she has been honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award every year. She is a recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and was inducted as a faculty member in the Arnold P. Gold Foundation's Gold Humanism Society. She has been a speaker at national conferences and locally at numerous grand rounds. Dr. Rachlin has also served as an advisor to a countless number of medical students applying for radiology residencies. Every year she is a staple at the Match Day ceremony to celebrate with her students.
